My Tattoo Artist

For me, finding the right tattoo artist was is really important. Getting a tattoo design is not something you should take lightly. It is true that there are some people who just, on the spur of the moment, walk into a tattoo studio and get some random tribal tattoo done. For the rest of us, however, getting ink is a pretty involved decision.

You see, tattoo artists are artists in the truest sense of the word. Each one has his or her own unique style, as well as individual strengths and weaknesses. There are some who specialize in Celtic tattoos. Celtic knots and crosses are pretty involved, and to really master them a tattoo artist has to spend years working on that particular style. Other people specialize in pin-up girls, cartoon style tattoos, biker tats, or something else.

That isn't to say that every tattoo artist can only do one thing. As a matter of fact, most tattoo parlors are willing to ink pretty much anything that you bring in. Even so, you don't want to go to someone who doesn't really have their heart in it. If you are just going in for something that is kind of basic – say a simple tribal tattoo or a navy star – you can probably get it done anywhere. If you want some ink that is a bit more individualistic and artsy, however, you should find someone who has a passion for that style. After all, a lousy tattoo will look lousy forever.

The tattoo artist that I go to is actually one of my friends. Right when he started to do work, he wanted to tattoo me. I was just a bit hesitant about it at first. He was not all that experienced, and back then his work did not look very good. I figured that I would wait until he had done a bit more and then let him have a go.

I'm glad that I waited. Within a year and a half, his work was a whole lot better. In truth, the difference was like night and day. He learned shading, detailed lines, and a lot of other things that he had not been able to do all that well to begin with. The particular design that I had in mind was pretty elaborate, so it was good that he was so skilled by the time I finally had him do it.
