Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy
Get ready for a ride to Ancient Egypt on one of the best video games created to this day. Sphinx and the Cursed mummy video game has it all; the graphics, the action, the battles, and the puzzles. While Sphinx is not up to the Zelda level of play, the video games is rock-solid and will hopefully start a fantastic and dynamic series.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy takes place in the wonderful world of Ancient Egypt. The game features two heros. Sphinx is the action hero of the game, and the mummy is the thinking hero of the game. At the start of the game, we meet Sphinx who is a demi-god like character. He is apprentice to a powerful magician Imhotep who provides Sphinx his training. The magician warns of impending doom for the dark town of
Uruk. Nearby, in the kingdom of Luxor, the mummy-to-be named Tutankhamen is wandering around the palace getting into trouble with his naive boyishness. He stumbles onto an evil plot by his advisors to take his kingdom away and being a little clumsy and ignorant of the evil of men, he is taken and turned into the lifeless mummy character. This is the point where the two heros meet and join forces to rid Uruk of the impending threat.
Other characters met in the game contribute to the quest in one form or another. Some of them are demi-god like Sphinx, others are famous like the god Anubis and the princess Nerfertiti. Mix in some human characters with some unidentifiable characters and they all combine together to really bring the environments and interactions to life and help make them real.
Combining two heros in a single game is not an easy task. The balance achieved between Sphinx and the mummy for game play is ideal. Sphinx, being the action half, has to acquire his abilities as the game goes along. He comes across the mystical Blade of Osiris, and a neat blowpipe for shooting darts, along with improved swimming abilities. Most of Sphinx's weapons can be used in town at little skill shops where he can earn awards for showing his expertise.
The mummy, once transformed, has no fighting abilities. He is the brains of the operation, and spends most of his time solving tricky and challenging puzzles. It is a good thing the mummy is dead due to the fact most of his puzzles involve harming himself in some way to accomplish the task. He can be set on fire, flattened, electrocuted, and split into multiple mummies. The mummy sequences of the game are the most amusing and enjoyable parts due to the harm which must befall him to solve the task at hand. This shift in game play from the main action portion of the game allows the player to take a breather and really enjoy the mummy's intricate puzzles. Don't worry about the well-being of the mummy, though. Remember, he's already dead.
The game primarily consists of puzzles, and whether you're playing Sphinx or the mummy, most of them are intriguing instead of frustrating. Exploration is the key, especially in dungeon-type environments. While the pace of the story is a little slow at first, it eventually does pick up and take off. The mechanics of fighting are not the best due the lack of targeting available. Some play involves back-tracking to pick up needed items, but overall the puzzles and fun missions make up for this.
The graphics of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy are truly exquisite. The characters themselves have highly detailed facial features. The mummy's expressions before some danger is about to befall him are easily readable. Sphinx carries expressions of cockiness, which is evident in some of his looks. He is a demi-god, after all and very confident in his abilities. The environments Sphinx and the mummy get to wander in are very realistic and detailed. Widespread areas have interesting topography, and caverns are damp, dark and creepy. The camera views are an acceptable and highly useful for most of the game.
The musical score of Sphinx meets well with the situations. Before a tough fight sequence, the music really brings the feeling of doom to the player. Sounds effects are well-placed and contribute well throughout. The only missing auditory item for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is the fact that the characters do not actually talk. With the intricate detail evident in the expressions of the characters, one has to wonder why.
Overall the Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy video game is a first-rate adventure. Characters come to life with their fantastic facial expressions. Environments are rich in detail and easy to maneuver around in. Puzzles are difficult and thought-provoking. This adventure game will take you on a wonderful ride.
