Should The IT Guy Get Certified
I hear this question a lot. Should I get certified? I think, outside of medical, IT is one of the major industries where certification can take you over the top. There are some jobs that require it, and other industries have similar requirements.
Certification or Education? Well, honestly, both. In the past, just having a degree automatically meant a good paying job, but this is not always the case. In the IT field, (information technology) experience and certification are playing just as big of a role as education and degrees. Now, from my experience, as a network engineer, having a degree can put you over the top when it comes to management positions, but as a technical person, certifications can go a long way. They show you've learned to implement the technologies that you will be working with.
There are various types of certifications, all depending on what you job function is. You can be certified in Microsoft technologies, Cisco networking technologies, information security, web development, programming, or anything else out there that falls under the IT scope.
I will say, personally, by being certified, doors have been opened to me that I'm not sure would have been, had I not had my certifications. So you make the choice, if you feel like your IT career needs a boost, check out some of the certifications available. Chose one that fits your current job or one you'd like to do.
Enjoy, the process of learning new things, or relearning old ones. The process itself teaches me a lot about the technology I am interested it. The test just solidifies what I have learned. Now, they are not always easy, and I've taken quite a few, but I always love seeing that "Congratulations, you passed with a score of..." after I submit my test.
