Search Bar
It seems that everywhere I look there is a search bar for some reason or another. Though I understand that searching is the most common way to find anything online, I can’t imagine that each site needs to have one of these, at least if it is not connected to the site. You can’t fight progress though, and if they are going to be all over the Internet, you might as well take advantage of them and get use to seeing them. There are different types though, and some are more useful than others.
The major search engines try to get search bars on as many sites as they possibly can so that more and more people use their particular search. This is a matter of competition and that is to be expected. Some even pay when a user on a site decides to use that toolbar, though it is not a lot of money. When you sign up for Google Adsense, you have the option of adding their search bar to your site. However, the problem with this is that when someone uses that particular bar, they are going to be taken off of your site to see the results and they may not return.
The most useful search bar is the one that will search a site, not the entire Internet. This is useful for many reasons, and the biggest is to find something on a site that has a lot of information, much like a news or content site. You might be looking for something that is on that site, but you don’t want results to come up from the rest of the Internet. When looking for something that you know was on a particular site, but you can’t seem to find it, this is when the localized search bar is most useful.
When using such a search bar, remember to decide if it is what you need or not before you use it. If you think it is a localized website search, and you end up with results from all over the net, you are not going to find what you need as quickly. Some give the option of searching the site or searching the entire Internet, and you simply have to click the box you need. However, some are just for an Internet-wide search and that is not going to help when looking for something specific on one site in particular.
