Nuclear Power Plant
I was about eight years old when I saw my first nuclear power plant. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and that meant that I was familiar with what happened at Three Mile Island. This made me fearful, so I can’t say that I was thrilled when I first saw one that day on the way to the amusement park with my dad. He was excited to point it out to me, and explained that even though there was some danger involved, he thought they were going to become very important in our world. My dad is a history buff, but he also holds what will happen in the future in wonder.
I’m not sure how safe the nuclear power plant of today is, but I can say that I have not heard of any accidents since there was one in Russia over a decade ago. I remember Three Mile Island vaguely, but I was too young to really understand what was going on. I do know that I am still somewhat fearful of them, but there are not too many anywhere near where I live now. Though I know it is a great way to create power, I have to wonder if they are worth the risk.
I know that the knowledge behind building a nuclear power plant is far beyond me, and that if they think they are safe to have near us, then perhaps I should trust that things will be fine. If recent history tells me anything, it is that they are more safe than I thought they were. If there have been any sort of accidents at any nuclear power plant anywhere in the world recently, I have yet to hear about it. Because I was so fearful as a child, I know a new story like that would definitely catch my eye.
Even though the nuclear power plant is highly efficient, and pretty safe as it turns out, I still think there has to be a better way to get power. I can’t knock it because I don’t have the answers, but it would seem that the threat of a problem is something that would send everyone into a panic, even though they go largely unnoticed as of late. There has to be a way that we can get the power we need without having to worry about an accident that has the potential to kill thousands at once and within minutes.
Summary
Nuclear power plants are very safe these days. There are so many control and checks put in place to prevent a spill or accident that you do not hear of any problems with these buildings. Although they generate power to provde for everyone, there should be more natural methods developed to creat energy for everyone
