Internet Radio Stations
I am not particularly web savvy, and I didn't really understand radio stations over the Internet until very recently. As a matter of fact, if one of my kids haven't explained Internet radio stations to me, I probably still wouldn't be able to use them. Can you blame me? Normal radio requires a receiver, so logically I assumed that Internet radio station would require the same. I didn't realize that all you needed to do was click on the link to get free Internet radio! It is amazing what you can do nowadays from the comfort of your own home.
If you haven't checked out Internet radio stations, you really should. Basically, anything you can hear on the normal radio you can hear on the Internet. The big difference, of course, is that the sound is crystal clear. As long as you have a good connection and the website you're connecting to is in good working order, there should be no problem at all. Some of the stations even have archives of their old broadcasts, so you can listen to basically anything that has played on it recently.
One of the coolest things about Internet radio stations is that you can hear programming that is not even on the radio. One of my favorite Internet talk radio stations, for example, is basically an audio broadcast all about cooking ethnic cuisine from all over the world. As far as I know, it is never broadcast on the radio. It doesn't matter. Every week, they record an Internet radio broadcast and put it out over the Web. You can listen to it live, or you can tune in later and hear it on archive.
According to my son, you can even make your own Internet radio stations. Although this is probably beyond my level of ability, he has promised to help me. You see, I have been interested in the age of classic radio for a long time. I have an extensive collection of old radio broadcasts, and I would love to share them over an Internet radio station with people all over the world. If he can help me set up something like this in my own house, it would be great. I have always dreamed of being a radio DJ, and although Internet radio stations aren't quite the same thing, they still are pretty glamorous. The big difference is that people, instead of hearing me all over the country, could hear me all over the world!
Summary
Internet radio stations are offer listeners much more than can be heard over traditional radio. Given the reach of the internet, you can even listen to other countries broadcasts easily. Starting your own internet radio station can be done as well if you have a genre you enjoy that others will probably enjoy.
