Internet Dating

Until several years ago, internet dating was looked at as a bit strange. I mean, why would you want to meet someone on the internet? Whatever happened to going out to a bar to try a cheesy pick-up line on some complete stranger? Then suddenly, all these successful internet dating sites started and happy couples claimed to have found love online because of these popular sites.

I’ve often wondered, how can you actually date someone through the internet? You can meet someone online and chat several times a day, talk on the phone and even agree to meet in person. But, can you really fall in love with someone who could be pretending to be practically anyone? Would you willingly agree to go out with someone who could just be telling you what you want to hear? If you have never watched America’s Most Wanted, spend a few moments watching it. You’ll see what can happen if you trust the wrong person. However, for every person who swears that they would never, ever give the time of day to someone over the internet, there is someone who will introduce you to their spouse. How’d they meet their spouse? Online.

We’ve all seen the commercials on television. Match.com is one of the most popular sites. Sure, you have to pay for a membership fee but they offer more of a sense of security and confidence than a lot of other sites. Their success rate is fairly high. I never thought highly of internet dating. In fact, I wondered why you’d ever be that desperate. Then, my very best friend started telling about this amazing guy that she’d met. I wondered how in the world she’d ever even had time to meet someone; she was a full-time college student and working some crazy hours. She didn’t enjoy the bar scene and hated being set up on blind dates. Unbeknownst to me, she had joined an internet dating website. She had met her boyfriend online and gotten to know him for several weeks until she agreed to meet him in person. To her credit, she met him as safely as possible – in a very public and popular café for lunch. They hit it off immediately and I’d never seen her so happy about a relationship. After six months of dating, he proposed. After I’d met him and realized how incredibly perfect they were for each other, my thoughts about internet dating changed. Sure, internet dating has led to some people portraying themselves as someone else. And sure, you can get lured into a bad situation. However, that can happen at anytime, anywhere – no matter what. It isn’t limited to simply internet dating. In fact, internet dating can be a really safe way to get to know someone. You don’t have the pressures of meeting them immediately and can get to know their personalities before you see them in person. After they tied the knot, I found myself wondering if I could find my Prince Charming online. You just never know anymore.

Summary

Internet dating is becoming the dating method of choice. New sites come up all the time, and established sites receive thousands of visitors a day. To join a site, there is usually a membership fee involved. Some are due monthly while others are a one time fee. There are some which are free, but remember you get what you pay for.
