The History Of Computers

The other day, I was shopping for a new computer in a local electronics store. It was not your typical electronics store like Best Buy or Circuit City. Instead, it was a small, locally owned outfit run by the king of all geeks. This guy was great. You could tell that he built computers because of his passion for them. He even had a history of computer timeline on the back wall of his office!

Shopping in that store really got me thinking. I realized how little I knew about this machine that I had always depended on so much. The history of computers was something that baffled me. I had always wanted to learn a little bit about computer science history, but I had always been too intimidated by it. I do not do well in math and science areas, not having the analytical mind for them. Nonetheless, I felt like I should at least learn little bit about the history of computer technology.

I asked the geek about the history of computer technology, and he pointed me in a couple of directions. First he started telling me about books, but then he changed his mind. He told me that one of the best places to learn about computer history was the Internet. I liked the idea of learning about computers on computers, so I decided to get to work. It was definitely to be an epic exploration.

I had no idea how far back the history of computer science went. Everywhere on the Internet traced it to a different origin, but it is clear that computers – or at least thinking about computers – goes back into antiquity. Apparently, people were planning out water operated difference engines long before electricity made modern computation possible! The history of technology in general is very rich, and computers are in many ways the culmination of human technology. They are a machine designed to abstract logical processes and calculate them much more quickly than a human being can.

I have always found something incredibly beautiful about that. Learning about the history of computers fills me with wonder. I can just imagine what it would be like to be the first person to think about coming up with a machine that operates in pure logic. How exciting! I had never realized before how interesting the history of computer science could be. Perhaps it will motivate me to go back and learn programming.

Summary

The history of computers is truly a fascinating journey. The evolution from early ideas into the technology available to day is mind-boggling to say the least. Check online or at your local bookstore for more information. There's much to discover.
