Depression is an illness that causes a person to feel sad and hopeless much of the time. It is different from normal feelings of sadness, grief, or low energy. Fatigue is another symptom; a depressed person might stay in bed all day for long stretches at a time. One of the most dangerous symptoms of depression are is suicidal feelings.

Stress, such as the death of a loved one, an illness, alcohol and drugs can all trigger depression.
Depression is often treated with medications, and counseling by a doctor or a psychiatrist depending on the severity of the depression. Severe depression can result in inpatient care at a hospital. Let your doctor know if you believe you are depressed, because depression is often overlooked. If you are diagnosed with depression, you and your doctor can decide on the best treatment. The earlier you are treated, the more quickly you will recover.
