Before there were discussion forums, your fascination with dreams and their meanings was limited to reading books and possibly finding one or two other people who shared your interest to discuss the finer points. If you loved math, you might also be in a group of one or two classmates who were equally enthusiastic. Having problems in chemistry? You needed to engage a tutor, or make an afterhours appointment with your instructor for help. Discussion forums have changed this forever.
Unlike chat rooms, which are wholly interactive, focused on an online form of socializing, discussion forums are dedicated to an exchange of ideas and information on particular topics. In the chat rooms, exchanges between members are more of the “Hiya, how are ya doing? Did you see the Academy Awards?” “Yeah, it was OK.” Perhaps lacking in substance, but still enjoyed by plenty of people. The relationships formed in chat rooms tend to be transient.
By contrast, discussion forums are filled with people who are passionate on a specific issue or topic, often characterized by lively debates and regular interaction with everyone participating on a regular basis. Over time, you may form many close friendships with other forum members, based on your mutual interests and compatible personalities. This can be time well spent, satisfying your desire to meet people on a more than superficial level, gaining knowledge and stimulating your mind, broadening your horizons on your favorite subject.
Let's say your burning interest in device drivers is your thing. It's not likely that you're going to meet people in your everyday life who will stay awake while you talk about the latest info on device drivers. You'd have to admit that the topic is fairly obscure. However, there are discussion forums on device drivers! You can type your heart out on the forums and get plenty of feedback from likeminded individuals.
High school and college students can increase their knowledge and gain terrific insights on any academic subject, by joining a discussion forum. Let's say you're a law student and need to research the particulars of some point of law. A law forum is out there, with students, lawyers and ordinary people with opinions just waiting to offer their input.
This is not to say that these forums are limited to scholarly topics. Hobbies, such as gardening, cooking, chess, celebrity watching and fashion are all covered in the online universe of discussion forums. You'll also find forums on more esoteric subject matter. Would you believe there are forums dedicated to skepticism? Are you a fervent pet lover? An environmental activist? A budding, or experienced web designer? Maybe you just want to rant. There's a forum for you to join, with hours of pleasurable interaction.
Most of us have such busy schedules, we have little time for socializing or meeting people who share our passions for a hobby or subject matter in real life. However, the discussion forums provide plenty of intense interaction, with access as quick as a couple of mouse clicks. Best of all, joining is free!
So there's no reason to sit around feeling deprived of company and substantive discussion.
