Conker's Bad Fur Day

Nintendo took a very long time to climb out of it's kid responsible entertainment mentality and has broken all the rules with the release of Conker's Bad Fur Day. Not only does this game have bloody body parts, it has burping, farting, throwing up, and any other bodily function possible has been put into this game. Not that it is a bad thing; it's kind of nice to see after the pristine behavior of Rareware. This game is highly irreverent and not recommended for the under 18 group. If you are an adult player, you

will love the extreme scenes and anything-goes game play. Rare takes a cute little squirrel and puts him in a wide array for situations no squirrel should ever have to encounter. So, hold on to your drink - no beer fouls please.

Conker is the story's hero, and he's an adorable little squirrel who has been out a little too late and over-indulged with his friends at the local bar. Conker sets out on a dark and stormy night a little tipsy, ( ok, a lot ) and wakes up to find himself not where he was headed the night before. This world is full of gigantic creatures made of excrement, baby dinosaurs, lustful bees, and all sorts of bizarre beings. Conker's

first encounter in this world is a scarecrow, who is drunk, and later on sounds like a pusher. This is one of the tamer individuals, though, and he helps Conker with his quest to get home. While characters in the game are fond of cussing, Conker himself doesn't indulge too much in this area. He saves it for maximum impact.

On Conker's journey, there are context sensitive buttons throughout which provide Conker with whatever tool, or item, or activity he needs to accomplish the particular task. Such as, when Conker is fighting the monstrous pile of doo, he has access to a button which when he stands on it, gives him ammo in the form of toilet paper which he can throw at the creature to destroy it. There are also lots of movie spoofs in the story which pop up from time to time; one of the bosses Conker fights turns into the terminator. Matrix, The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, and others, get a small bit in this game.

Game play is what you'd expect to find with a video game. Swimming, running, flying, attacking, and more running, and climbing. Conker crosses over long distances by flying, using his tail like a helicopter. The game has the traditional puzzles, racing, and mini-games you'd expect and skill is needed for some of the more difficult tasks. Expect to kill Conker several times by being electrocuted, cut in half, or flattened. The Grim Reaper puts you back in play after a fatal accident. Some areas are not camera friendly and you do find yourself flying blind in a few spots. After the initial adventure is over, Conker does have extra play time for multi-player rounds. These range from both players being tanks, and trying to blow each other up to battling against raptors over their eggs.

Conker's graphics are really top-notch for the Nintendo 64. Anywhere Conker casts a shadow, it is visibly apparent. The lighting involved in all environments has been paid attention to and really does the game justice. The designers of Conker took out all the stops for Conker's facial expressions. His look expresses whether he is happy, mad, or determined, and since he is such a cute little character, all of them are amusing.

The sound quality included with this video game is outstanding. You can hear Conker's footsteps on every type of environment Conker walks on, whether its wood, concrete, or doo-doo. The music fits perfectly to the environment Conker is in at the time. Outside is happy-go-lucky, and inside, with the king of doo-doo, the musical score is full of tubas sounding likes farts. Tell me the team at Rare did not have a ball making this video game. While as noted above, Conker's Bad Fur Day is not recommended for the younger set. If you'd like to enjoy a video game that is not reined in too much, and is an off-beat journey, give Conker a try. Your day might not be as bad as you thought!
