I have worked in the social services field for twenty five years. In that time I have seen a wide range of human emotions. I have seen everything from complete joy to utter tragedy. Even though there are times that I think I have seen and heard everything, a new story will come across my desk that will surprise and even shock me. I cannot believe how we treat fellow human beings. Throughout my career my husband constantly reminds me that I am working with a small percentage of the population, however human pain and emotional suffering seems to surround me at times.
My career has taken me along many paths. I have worked for private agencies as well as government agencies. I have found that there is a greater ability to provide hands on services when working for the private sector. The government jobs are higher pay, but they are also higher stress and a great deal of bureaucracy. As I work with the various families and individuals many clients have made a similar request they have wanted to find out how to change your name. Some of the requests come from children that have been abused and forgotten by their parents. They want to learn how to change your name so that they can distance themselves from the bad memories and feelings of their past. Through the years I have found that it is rather a simple procedure to change your name, and it can be done through a variety of court hearings. All court administration offices are to have a variety of legal forms available to the public. Larger counties have a display of the various forms as well as the ability to download them onto a computer. These forms range from filing motions to writing your own divorce papers. One of the forms available is to change your name. There do not have to be any special circumstances for wanting a name change. You need to supply the court with documentation of your identity including birth certificate, social security number as well as two people that can vouch that you are who you say you are. Once the form is filled out and filled with the court administration there is a brief hearing for the judge to look over the paper work and to write an order granting the new name. You then need to take the court order to social security office and drivers license bureau so that your name can be altered in the system. The procedure to change your name can also be done in conjunction with a divorce hearing, child support hearing and family court issues. The fees are minimal for the court procedure, however getting a new license, birth certificate, banking changes and all the other areas where your name appears can be time consuming and the costs do accumulate. Summary: The need or desire to change your name can ceom from many situations. Some may be abused or abandoned children who want no ties to their former families. Others may be abused spouses, or someone who needs to enter the witness protection program. It is a matter of submitting the proper documentation to the court system, and following up with all the departments who need a record of the name change.
