Call Of Duty 3

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better first person shoot-em-up than this version of Call of Duty. This game, like many other video game legacies, outperforms its predecessor in style, graphics, and performance. If you are a fan, do not miss this one.

The story behind Call of Duty 3 is World War II during the Normandy era. Storm the beach, and rid France of the Nazi infiltration. You will help other countries on missions

like Britain and Poland which helps give a fresh view on the fact that other countries lost soldiers in the war and contributed greatly to winning the war. By fighting for other armies, you realize how difficult it was to rid France of the German army. By interacting with the other soldiers, you learn a great deal about your comrades.

Play begins with a training session to get familiar with throwing grenades, firing your weapon and moving around in general. You have the usual control for camera view, weapons, grenades. Once training is complete, you head out for battle and are literally thrown in to one of the biggest battles of the entire game with bullets flying everywhere, soldiers dropping left and right, and others searching for cover and new targets. When you get hit, the screen glows red around the edges moving inward as you sustain more damage. To restore your health, move to a safe area where you can't be hit. You can pitch grenades back to enemy soldiers before they explode in your area. You can also hold a grenade until it is almost ready to explode, and then throw it. Be careful not to hold it for too long before throwing.

The video game has 14 missions altogether and playing time is not very long at around 10 hours. Missions are varied and can range anywhere from moving from one location to another, defending an area, and preparing explosives to rescuing hostages from their captors. All missions are what you would expect to perform in a war-based video game and it is easy to identify your mission objective by looking for the star on your radar. While most of your missions are on foot, you do get additional perks like driving a tank, or a jeep while on your mission.

Graphics are pretty good all around, although the game does have slightly more hesitation and frame problems on PS2 than on XBox. Online play fares very well also, and multiplayers have several kits to choose from. The graphics themselves are nicely put together with lots of cover for the player on missions.

Bugs did creep up occasionally resulting in replay of level from a checkpoint when certain needed weapons were trapped behind walls, or game-controlled soldiers stopped in front and in back,  trapping the player's soldier. Sometimes the soldiers themselves would end up stuck in a wall, or float in air. None of these problems will stop players from completing the game, but they are annoying when they do happen.

The musical score of Call of Duty 3 is astounding. The Slovak Symphony Orchestra performs a beautiful orchestral piece written by Joel Goldsmith which accompanies the action perfectly. The actions sounds themselves are first-rate whether its bullets whizzing past, or tanks, or chatter by enemy and friendly soldiers. It is all extremely well-done.
