Brick Houses

I've seen a lot of inexpensive new construction going on in my neighborhood, and I'm not sure how I feel about some of it. Some of them are solidly built houses made out of hard wood and stone, but with other houses it seems like they do the least possible for the most amount of money. They put up soft drywall, assembling the houses in months by cutting corners on materials. I'm sure some of these houses are well built, but some of them don't have the solidity of the century-old homes in other parts the neighborhood.

It isn't that I'm such a fan of antiquity. I don't mind new things. I just like the solidity of brick houses. Give me a masonry wall over drywall or even hardwood. I'll choose it any time. I know that bricks are not the best material in some ways. They are somewhat expensive to build with and are not very earthquake resistant, for example. Still, if you live somewhere with solid bedrock, you can't do any better than brick.

Another great thing about brick houses is that they insulate well. No matter what newfangled expensive insulation you get, you probably won't do any better. And a brick house doesn't just insulate from heat. The house I am living in right now is about a hundred years old, and it is one of the most soundproof buildings I have ever been in. I don't really hear the kids playing outside unless they're being extremely loud, and even when that happens I can usually tune it out. It has solid core doors, thick floors, and a nice heavy brick fence to add a little bit of protection and sound insulation. I like being a good neighbor, but I also relish my privacy. Living in a brick building is good for both.

Although I often complain about new construction, there have been some encouraging things happening in my neighborhood. One of the new developments is made entirely of brick houses. They are definitely a little bit pricier, but I'm hoping that people are willing to pay it. By demanding quality, solidly built homes, people will be making the right choice and the right statement. It simply doesn't make sense to invest in a clapboard house that isn't going to last very well even if you are buying in one of the trendiest neighborhoods in town. I'd rather live a little further out on the outskirts in a well-built house that will be easy to maintain, wouldn't you?

Summary

Brick houses are a good investment due to being made of solid brick. This is a great looking cost effective building material which requires little maintenance compared to other types of materials. Brick houses also insulate very well saving you money on heating and cooling over the lifetime of the house. Brick costs more if you are building a house, but pays for itself eventually.
