I started collecting beer signs in college. Since then, it has become one of my greatest passions, but back in the day, I began it on a whim. I think it was more of a dare, actually. I was joining my first fraternity, and the initiation was to steal a pub sign. It wasn't one of those neon beer signs. Actually, it was kind of old school. It was designed to look like an antique sign, although I had reason to believe that it had only been actually made the year before. Nonetheless, stealing that beer sign was kind of a rush. I had never stolen anything before, and I was terrified that I would get caught. At the time, it seemed like a much bigger deal than it was. After all, that sign could not have been worth that much!
It is so funny to me that I started off stealing bar signs. After all, now I run a bar of my own. Pub signs are our specialty. Our drinks are okay, and we have a reasonable selection of beer, but people mostly come here for the ambiance. It is quite a bar. We have neon beer signs all over the place, as well as antique pub signs from all over the world. The walls are literally covered with them. occasionally, people bring in new signs for us. We have a deal going, you see, where we will trade a drink for an interesting sign. You'd be made amazed by how many people take advantage of this. It is really something. I'm not sure that all the beer signs are come by honestly, but we don't ask too many questions. If someone is a good customer then we take their word for it. My favorite beer signs are the unconventional ones. The neon signs are okay, but when I find an antique wooden sign, I get excited. Finding something rare and one-of-a-kind is always exciting, and if it reflects your passion, it is even better. My passion is beer as well as old bars. A lot of my beer signs are actually bought off of eBay. It is amazing how many collectors and sellers there are out there. I hate to brag, but in the past two years I have become somewhat of an expert. I know the best signs, and can immediately tell an antique from a forgery. Summary: Collecting beer signs is usually a hobby for those who are in college, or never left college mentally. You can find some really different signs in various places and online. Some people collect signs from all over the world that are antique. These are prized by collectors.
