My First Audition Casting Call

Although I decided I wanted to be an actor when I was quite young, It to me a long time to get up the courage to actually try out. More actors than you would imagine are naturally shy people. That is, after all, why many of us do it – to get over our own social anxieties and prove to ourselves and the world that we can shine. At acting schools and audition casting calls, everyone tries to put on an image of supreme self-confidence, but the reality is much different. Inside, almost everyone is scared.

When I tried out for my first audition casting call, I thought I would play it safe. I tried out for a part that I was pretty sure I would not get. They were looking for someone a little bit younger than me, and with different physical attributes. Basically, I was too tall and a bit too chubby for the role. Nonetheless, I thought it would be a great way for me to test my acting skills out. I had been taking actors workshops, reading plays, studying classic movies, and in general doing everything I could to prepare myself to be a great actor. This audition casting call, I figured, would be sort of a cold run for the real one.

When I got there, however, my nerves took over . Although I knew that I wasn't trying out for a role that I particularly wanted or had a chance of getting, I still felt like scared that the audition casting call would not go well. I was practically shaking in my shoes! Nonetheless, I managed to pull it together. This is a skill that all actors must have. Writers can be neurotic and brooding, and directors can be grouchy and demanding, but actors have to be able to put out a polished image of themselves no matter how they're feeling inside.

To be honest, the audition casting call was sort of a blur for me. I really can't remember what I did there, other than that I felt very nervous and was worried that I would bomb. Apparently I didn't. I didn't get the role, but I did interest the director. He kept my number and, a few months later, gave me a call. There was another actors casting call, and he had a part in mind that he thought I would fit perfectly. Although it wasn't all that glamorous, it was still a great first role. I'm not sure at all if I will ever make it as a professional actor, but I'm glad to be finally making some progress in that direction.

Summary: No matter how calm everyone looks, during an audition casting call everyone is nervous. No matter how much preparation you work on, the actual day of the audition is still the same. This feeling is actually good since actors are required to perform a certain way no matter how they may be feeling on the inside. Persistence always pays off in the long run, so keep trying for your dreams.
