Aruba History

Aruba is today part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The first inhabitants were part of the Arawak tribe, the Caquetios Indians. Pieces of the civilization found can be dated to 1000 A.D. The first European to arrive on the island was Spanish Explorer Alonso de Ojeda around 1499. Aruba came under Dutch control in 1636 and remained so until 1816. The English did have control over the island for the brief period of 1805 to 1816. The gold rush followed by an oil refinery opening in 1924 led to Aruba's prosperity. In

 

1986, Aruba succeeded from Netherlands Antilles and became a member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba stopped seeking it's own independence in 1990 due to popular demand of the inhabitants.Aruba beaches are the top reason for traveling to this Caribbean destination.

There are lots of things to do in Aruba and even more to see. Aruba scuba and Aruba fishing both follow the beach as funthings to see and do in Aruba. In addition, you can see a German freighter wreck. Visit Yamonta's Hill, Aruba's highest point.Fontein Cave and Arikok National Park both have Indian drawings. The beaches are popular as well. Palm Beach, EagleBeach, and Arashi Beach. Arashis is a great dive spot with colorful coral and fish. Aruba has something for just about everyone. It is definitely a do-not-miss and should be visited as you explore with travel.
