Animal Product Testing

For many years, a lot of people have assumed that product testing on animals is a necessary, if tragic, practice. Nowadays, however, people in the animal rights and environmental movement know that animal product testing is unnecessary, cruel, and easily replaced by more humane methods of research in most cases. The vast majority of animal product tests are done in situations where they can not possibly be justified. Testing perfumes, cosmetics, and other consumer products on animals rarely makes sense, since we already know the way that these products affect humans who are exposed to them. Even animal product testing involving new medicines is usually inferior to modeling the effect of the medication on computer simulations.

Of course, ending animal product testing is not the only thing that we have to do to end animal cruelty. A lot of the ways that we treat animals simply have to be changed. Some of them make me sick to even think about. For example, the meat and animal products industry is a disaster in every sense of the word. Animals are raised in small, constrictive pens where they barely have any room to move at all. They are slaughtered in ways that are painful and inhumane, and denied veterinary care while they are alive. Even many so-called organic farms are not much better. As a community, a nation, and a world, it is time that we take a long look at how we treat our fellow creatures and make some big changes.

Fortunately, there are a lot of things that even one individual can do to help end animal product testing. One of the very best things you can do is to donate to some charity that is working to help. There are all kinds of animal rights charities out there, including groups that focus on helping animals in general and organizations that focus more narrowly on animal product testing or some other issue. It is all up to you to find the one that seems to be doing the best work.

Even better than simply donating money to some sort of charity is getting involved yourself. You can start by writing letters to your local represented officials urging them to help end animal product testing. If you want to get even more involved, can volunteer for one of the charities out there working on ending animal cruelty. Not only is this one of the best ways to help, but it will also be a great way to make friends and feel good about yourself.
